The Inspiration
Swami Vivekananda famously said, “Give me 100 energetic young men and I shall transform India.” His vision for India was of a country led by its youth who would be strong, fearless, and independent; with the heart to “feel”, the head to “think” and hands to “work.” The SEED program conceived by the Vivekananda Institute for Leadership Development (V-LEAD), a unit of the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM) seeks to translate this vision into reality by creating a cohort of quality conscious and service-minded professionals for the development sector, year-on-year. The Program
The SEED program seeks to create a group of quality conscious and service-minded professionals for the development sector. A unique on the job training program where students get a 1-year immersive, self-reflective, and intensely focused opportunity to learn from the best experts and coaches even as they earn – an opportunity to become self-directed leaders in the Development Sector. The program comes with a stipend of INR 20,000 per month.
The program blends learning with work – after the 1-month classroom sessions, participants will be challenged to take up a research-intensive project from across 5 themes: Health, Education, Livelihoods, Environment, and Research.
Program Design/Modus Operandi
An intense, interactive 1-year immersion into SVYM programs and interventions using a Socratic, case-study approach. The coach/mentor presents ideas & scenarios while asking open-ended questions (20% of the time) and will expect the participants to voice their views, thoughts, and emotions (80% of the time).
A 1 month “bootcamp “Gurukul” precedes a 10-month intensive project-based immersion followed by 1 month to consolidate learning & submit a report – for a total of 12 months. Specific individuals from the cohort may be offered roles at SVYM solely at the discretion of SVYM and the members of the academic oversight committee. Individuals are also free to choose to engage or disengage with SVYM as they see fit. The infographic below summarizes the model. Each theme will have a mentor and a field-level-coach who will provide mentorship and oversee project execution respectively. An academic and learning needs council will have oversight over all mentors, field-coaches, & class-mentors.
